Cowl install using Skybolt camlocks
Just some summary comments. I ordered a piece or .063 flat sheet from Vans to use to mount the camlocs to the firewall. It was a 24" x 18" piece. I slit it into 2" piece. I ended up having to trim this down and make it about 1" 5/8 in some spots, especially around the lower cowl. The aluminum interfered with the foam of the cowling. Hope that makes sense but the honeycomb is surrounded by a foam layer and that is covered with epoxy. So around the edges in some places the foam was too close to the edge to allow the aluminum to lay flat against the cowling. I did have to cut some of the foam out and reseal those spots with epoxy. Besides that, It wasn't that big of a deal.
One thing that I wasted some time on was getting the clam shell to fit well before installing it the the plane. Yes, you do need to fit the front together but you have to cut the rear to fit the fuselage so any time spent leveling and squaring up the clam shell sides is a total waste of time.
Leave it long and sand back a little at a time. I've got a gap between the cowling and firewall that could have been avoided with a little patience. Of course the bottom fits perfectly and the sides fit perfectly but the top, right beside the oil door is where I let the cutting wheel take a little too much off.
(I'll add some commentary to the pictures later)
